1963 AJS 7R "Boy Racer" 350cc.

Taking its origins from the pre-war AJS “cammy” singles the 350cc 7r racing engine was launched in 1948 as an alternative to the 350cc Manx Norton. In 1956 the engine was heavily modified from the original long stroke to a squarer configuration. Whilst not as powerful as the DOHC Manx Norton, the “boy racer” was a lighter bike with superior handling and was recognised as being a faster cornering machine. Its simpler construction ensured it was a favourite with privateers and semi-professional stables such as the Tom Arter racing concern. Financial problems for the AMC concern saw production cease in 1954, although existing bikes were supported with spare parts up to 1963. Eventually all spares and production rights were bought by Sidecar racer and engineer Colin Seeley who viewed the withdrawl of British factory racing support, as an opportunity to develop a race machines for privateers. The 7r engine was used in the Seeley racing machine as a sister bike to the highly successful 500cc G50 engined machines. The early arrival of the 2 stroke invasion in the smaller capacities ensured that the AJS 350cc engines fate was sealed by the mid to late 1960’s.

The emergence of the classic motorcycle racing scene in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s saw a new lease of life for the AJS 7r. Replica machines continue to be manufactured and successful compete in events to this day.
